DESCRIPTION

COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM: HALLOWEEN, BABYLON & THE CALL TO HOLINESS

Kingdom Intelligence Briefing — Episode 552

Can Christians participate in something associated with darkness and simply redefine it as harmless fun?

Or does Scripture call believers to a much clearer separation between the Kingdom of God and the systems of Babylon?

In KIB 552, Dr. Michael Lake and Mary Lou Lake issue an urgent call for believers to examine Halloween, pagan traditions, occult imagery, entertainment, and cultural compromise through the lens of Scripture.

The question is not merely:

“Can Christians celebrate Halloween?”

The deeper question is:

WHAT FELLOWSHIP DOES LIGHT HAVE WITH DARKNESS?

The episode turns to Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 6:14–18. Dr. Lake argues that while the passage is frequently applied to marriage, Paul’s larger context addresses believers living in the midst of a deeply pagan culture.

Paul asks:

What partnership does righteousness have with lawlessness?

What fellowship does light have with darkness?

What agreement does the temple of God have with idols?

And then comes the command:

“Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing.” — 2 Corinthians 6:17

KIB 552 argues that this principle becomes increasingly important as the surrounding culture grows darker.

HALLOWEEN: HARMLESS FUN OR SPIRITUAL COMPROMISE?

Mary Lou encourages believers to begin praying well before Halloween and warns against treating occult imagery, fear, witchcraft, and related practices as harmless entertainment.

The episode discusses Halloween’s historical associations with Samhain and later cultural traditions, while emphasizing the spiritual principle that Christians should not deliberately familiarize their children with darkness.

Instead, children should become familiar with:

The Word of God.

Prayer.

The presence of God.

The peace of God.

The movement of the Holy Spirit.

Biblical truth.

Why?

Because what becomes familiar during childhood can influence what feels normal later in life.

Dr. Lake connects this principle with 1 Thessalonians 5:16–22, particularly Paul’s instruction to test everything, hold fast to what is good, and abstain from every form of evil.

WHAT ARE WE MAKING FAMILIAR TO OUR CHILDREN?

This becomes one of the most important practical questions in KIB 552.

If children repeatedly encounter witchcraft, horror, occult imagery, fear, and magic as entertainment, are Christians unintentionally teaching them to become comfortable with things Scripture tells believers to reject?

Mary Lou contrasts this with creating a home where children become familiar with the peace of God.

That familiarity can itself become a form of discernment.

When they enter an environment where God’s peace is absent, they can recognize:

Something has changed.

The goal is not raising children who live in fear of darkness.

The goal is raising children who know the atmosphere of God’s Kingdom well enough to recognize the counterfeit.

PAUL’S COMMAND: COME OUT AND BE SEPARATE

The theological center of KIB 552 is 2 Corinthians 6:14–18.

Dr. Lake argues that Paul is drawing a sharp biblical contrast:

RIGHTEOUSNESS vs. LAWLESSNESS

LIGHT vs. DARKNESS

CHRIST vs. BELIAL

THE TEMPLE OF GOD vs. IDOLS

CLEAN vs. UNCLEAN

HOLY vs. PROFANE

This pattern reaches back into Torah, where God’s people were taught to distinguish between what belongs to Him and what belongs to the surrounding pagan world.

The promise is extraordinary:

God wants to dwell among His people.

God wants to walk among His people.

God wants to be their God.

God wants them to be His people.

But the passage is immediately followed by the command to come out, be separate, and touch no unclean thing.

DANIEL: LIVING IN BABYLON WITHOUT BECOMING BABYLONIAN

KIB 552 then points to Daniel as a model for believers living in an increasingly pagan culture.

Daniel lived in Babylon.

He served within Babylon’s governmental system.

But Daniel 1:8 tells us that Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself.

He lived in Babylon without allowing Babylon to live in him.

When pressure increased, Daniel did not hide his allegiance to God.

He openly prayed.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow.

They were willing to become the minority.

They were willing to appear strange.

They were willing to stand apart from the crowd.

And God met them there.

The episode therefore raises a sobering end-times question:

If we cannot withstand the pressure to conform now, how will we withstand greater pressure later?

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT

Modern culture places enormous pressure on people—especially young people—to fit in.

Do what everyone else does.

Celebrate what everyone else celebrates.

Watch what everyone else watches.

Believe what everyone else believes.

But biblical holiness has always required God’s people to be different.

KIB 552 warns that learning to stand apart now may be preparation for the greater pressures Scripture says will characterize the last days.

The remnant must learn that being rejected by Babylon is preferable to being separated from the presence of God.

As Dr. Lake puts it near the conclusion:

“Don’t be afraid to be the oddball.”

THE FEASTS OF THE LORD: A DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVE

The episode does not merely tell believers what to leave.

It points toward something better.

Rather than centering family life around cultural traditions with questionable spiritual roots, Dr. Lake and Mary Lou encourage believers to rediscover the Feasts of the Lord.

These appointed times can become opportunities for:

Family fellowship.

Special meals.

Teaching children Scripture.

Remembering God’s faithfulness.

Celebrating His redemptive acts.

And keeping Christ at the center.

The guiding principle given in the episode is excellent:

Make it Christ-centered first and family-centered second.

HOLINESS AND THE DAYS AHEAD

As the return of Christ approaches, KIB 552 argues that the path before God’s people will require increasing holiness rather than increasing compromise.

God cannot simply transform pagan worship into acceptable worship by attaching Christian terminology to it.

Instead, Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to separate themselves from idolatry and uncleanness.

The issue ultimately becomes fellowship.

What are we fellowshipping with?

What atmosphere are we cultivating?

What kingdom are we becoming comfortable in?

Dr. Lake says:

“I need Him to be in the camp. I need Him to be in my house. I need Him to be in my family.”

That is the heart of the episode.

GET OUT OF BABYLON’S ATMOSPHERE

The program concludes not in fear, but in hope.

Mary Lou reminds listeners that prayer matters.

The weapons of our warfare are not carnal.

Believers can pray.

Families can change direction.

Doors can be closed.

God can give wisdom.

And the remnant can learn to live increasingly within the reality of God’s Kingdom.

Dr. Lake summarizes the challenge:

“God wants to be more real to us than the very breath in our bodies if we allow Him. But you’ve got to get out of the atmosphere of Babylon into the atmosphere of the Kingdom.”

Mary Lou then adds an important distinction:

In God’s Kingdom, there is always hope.

CALL TO ACTION

This October, do more than ask:

“What can I get away with?”

Ask:

“What brings my family closer to the presence of God?”

Examine what enters your home.

Examine what entertains your children.

Examine the traditions you inherited.

Examine the spiritual atmosphere you are cultivating.

And then compare everything with Scripture.

The goal is not fear.

The goal is holiness.

The goal is not isolation.

The goal is separation unto God.

And the goal is not merely escaping Babylon—it is learning how to live in the atmosphere of the Kingdom.
