DESCRIPTION

JESUS HIDDEN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: SEEING CHRIST FROM GENESIS TO MALACHI

Kingdom War Room — Episode 63

What if much of the modern Church understands only part of who Jesus is because we have disconnected Him from the Scriptures that came before Matthew?

In KWR 63, Dr. Michael Lake, Dr. Mike Spaulding, and Pastor Corby Shuey welcome back longtime Bible teacher and bestselling author Dr. Richard Booker for a powerful conversation about his new book, Hidden Pictures of Jesus in the Hebrew Bible, Volume 2: Joshua through Song of Solomon.

The central message is simple but profound:

Jesus was there all along.

Christ did not suddenly appear in Matthew.

The Torah points to Him.

The Prophets point to Him.

The Psalms point to Him.

The biblical stories, institutions, people, patterns, sacrifices, and redemptive events progressively reveal the Messiah.

Dr. Booker grounds the discussion in Jesus’ own teaching in Luke 24. On the road to Emmaus, Christ explained the Scriptures concerning Himself. Dr. Booker describes his three-volume series as the fruit of decades spent studying what Jesus could have shown those disciples from the Hebrew Scriptures.

MOSES WROTE ABOUT JESUS

Dr. Booker draws attention to the remarkable statement of Jesus in John 5:46:

“For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.”

That raises a question every Christian should consider:

How did Moses write about Jesus?

Dr. Booker shares his poem, “He Wrote About Me,” expressing the central message of his lifelong study: from the seed of the woman onward, God placed pictures of Messiah throughout Scripture.

Once believers learn to look for Him, they begin discovering Christ throughout the biblical story.

THE PROBLEM WITH WESTERN CHRISTIANITY

One major theme of KWR 63 is the Church’s loss of the cultural and biblical context of Scripture.

Dr. Booker explains that ancient biblical customs frequently functioned as “story pictures.” The people participating in them may not have understood their ultimate prophetic significance, but collectively those patterns form a picture of God’s redemptive work through Messiah.

When Christians do not understand the culture and context of the Hebrew Scriptures, many of those connections disappear.

The result can be a Christianity that effectively begins with Matthew instead of Genesis.

Dr. Lake and the panel discuss the continuing influence of Marcionism—the tendency to create a theological wall between the Old and New Testaments.

When that wall is erected, believers can lose the biblical background necessary for understanding the identity, ministry, commandments, and redemptive work of Jesus.

The Bible is one interconnected redemptive story.

The definitions and patterns established early in Scripture continue developing throughout the biblical narrative.

If we disconnect Matthew through Revelation from Genesis through Malachi, we risk creating our own picture of Jesus rather than allowing the entire Bible to reveal Him.

HIDDEN PICTURES OF JESUS

Dr. Booker walks through several examples from Volume 2:

  • Joshua — The Captain of Our Salvation
  • Judges — The Deliverer
  • Ruth — The Near Kinsman
  • 1 & 2 Samuel — The Faithful Judge
  • Kings & Chronicles — The King Greater Than David
  • Ezra — The Faithful Scribe
  • Nehemiah — The Restorer of Our Souls
  • Job — The Ever-Living Redeemer
  • Psalms — The New Song
  • Proverbs — The Wisdom of God
  • Ecclesiastes — The Goal of Our Life
  • Song of Solomon — The Lover of Our Soul

The biblical stories become much more than isolated Sunday-school lessons. They form interconnected portraits pointing toward Jesus Christ.

RUTH AND THE KINSMAN-REDEEMER

One of the most powerful discussions concerns Ruth and Boaz.

Under the biblical pattern, the redeemer had to be a near kinsman.

Boaz could redeem Ruth because he met the requirements of kinship.

Dr. Booker connects this directly to Christ.

For humanity to be redeemed, the Redeemer had to become one of us.

The incarnation was therefore not incidental to redemption. Jesus entered humanity and became our kinsman-redeemer.

This biblical picture helps explain why Jesus cannot merely be reduced to a prophet, moral teacher, or inspirational religious figure.

The eternal Son took upon Himself human nature in order to accomplish redemption.

STOP LOOKING ONLY FOR THE BLESSING

Perhaps the most memorable moment of KWR 63 comes when Dr. Booker observes that many people read Scripture looking for something God can give them rather than looking for Christ Himself.

His statement deserves to be remembered:

“They’re just looking for some blessing from Him, but He Himself is the blessing.”

Christianity is fundamentally about relationship with a Person—not manipulating biblical principles to obtain things.

Dr. Booker uses marriage as an illustration:

Would you rather possess the wedding ring—or the person who gave you the ring?

The gift points to the giver.

The blessing points to Christ.

If we find Him, we have found the true treasure.

A FRESH HUNGER FOR JESUS

KWR 63 ultimately becomes much more than a discussion about a book.

It becomes an invitation to rediscover the Bible.

Slow down.

Read carefully.

Study the context.

Follow the patterns.

Look for the connections.

And above everything else:

LOOK FOR JESUS.

The episode closes with Dr. Booker praying that viewers would receive a fresh hunger for God and experience a life-changing encounter with Him.
